Proparco lends Khan Bank $50M, with $20M for rural Mongolian SMEs
What's the deal? ProparcoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has agreed a $50 million senior loan to Mongolia's Khan BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, splitting the facility between $30 million for climate-related investment and $20 million for SMEs in underserved rural provinces. The transaction was signed during UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar.
Why now? The deal is the third between the French development financier and Khan Bank. It is designed to supply longer-duration funding in a market where long-term finance remains scarce.
What's the endgame? Sixty percent of the facility will finance climate mitigation and adaptation projects. Proparco named renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable buildings among expected mitigation uses, while eligible adaptation projects may include sustainable livestock and agricultural investment.
The remaining 40%, or $20 million, is reserved for SMEs in ten rural provinces where poverty exceeds the national average. That combines climate finance with a geographically targeted source of longer-term corporate liquidity for businesses outside Ulaanbaatar.
The details: Proparco did not disclose the loan's maturity, interest margin, or any sub-loan limits. It said domestic long-term funding remains limited, meaning the facility should let Khan Bank offer maturities beyond those normally available locally.
That tenor matters for SMEs funding equipment or agricultural improvements, whose cash generation plays out over several years rather than a short working-capital cycle. Khan Bank operates 535 branches, giving it the network to direct the rural component beyond Mongolia's main commercial centre.
The signal: For Proparco, the deal uses an established local bank to push capital towards regions it considers underserved. For Khan Bank, it adds US-dollar long-term funding while broadening the pool of finance available for sustainable projects and rural businesses.
