The scale: The two acquired firms operate more than 500 independent-contractor drivers and 43 employees, completing about 250,000 orders a year. Their services span medical courier work, small parcel, on-demand delivery, box truck freight and e-commerce fulfilment.

What's the endgame? The deal deepens PCE's Midwest presence across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, and adds healthcare and e-commerce expertise. It targets Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis while also covering markets including Cleveland, Detroit and Milwaukee.

"Priority Dispatch and Diamond Expedited give us decades of expertise and a leading position in three of our top target markets," said Mark Cossack, chief executive officer of PCE. "Their healthcare and ecommerce know-how strengthens what we can offer customers across the entire network."

The other side: Jeff Thomas, owner of the acquired businesses, said joining PCE lets his companies "expand into new end markets with our healthcare and long-term care logistics solutions" and gives customers "the backing of a larger, national platform."

The signal: The acquisition reflects continued consolidation in last-mile and expedited freight, as backers roll up well-run, founder-led regional operators onto national platforms.
