Athena Agentic buys Maxxsure to add cyber risk scoring to its platform

The transaction is effective June 5, 2026.
What does each side do? Athena Agentic runs a platform that combines autonomous security operations, vulnerability management, AI governance, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC). Founded in 2016, Maxxsure built the M-Score engine, which measures organizational cyber risk in financial terms.
Why does it matter? Maxxsure calculates risk from a company's own operations, external exposure, and third-party vendors rather than generic benchmarks. That produces scores tied to potential financial loss — and adds a full GRC module to Athena's platform.
What changes for customers? Existing Maxxsure customers keep full product support and will gain access to enhanced capabilities as integration proceeds. Athena plans to reimagine the M-Score technology across its platform to shift customers from reactive breach response to proactive risk governance.
Why now? The deal lands as adversary breakout times shrink to seconds and the average cost of a data breach passes $4.44 million. Athena is betting the ability to act at machine speed and explain risk in financial terms has become a board-level need.
What they said: "Maxxsure does something most security vendors never attempt: it puts cyber risk in a language that CEOs, CFOs, and boards of directors actually act on," said Steve Canton, chairman of Athena Agentic. Maxxsure chief executive officer Kevin Thomsen called the deal "a new chapter," adding that the company now has "the platform and the partners to bring that belief to enterprise scale."
The signal: The acquisition places Athena at the intersection of two cybersecurity priorities — autonomous threat response and quantifiable risk management. As buyers consolidate onto unified platforms, vendors are racing to bundle detection, governance, and financial risk scoring into one ecosystem.
