Anthro Energy breaks ground on $45M Kentucky factory to feed US battery supply chain

What's the deal? Anthro Energy broke ground Tuesday on a Louisville, Kentucky, factory that can produce enough electrolyte for more than 300,000 electric vehicles. The plant will make 25 gigawatt-hours' worth of electrolytes annually and is scheduled to start production in 2028.

Why now? Battery makers are racing to secure materials free of "foreign entity of concern" restrictions — supply not controlled by Chinese companies. Anthro wants its factory to fill that gap for US customers.

What's the endgame? The startup, which raised its first funding round four years ago, wants the factory to anchor the emerging US battery supply chain. "Within a 12-hour drive, you can get to 70% of the battery production facilities in the United States that exist today," said co-founder and chief executive officer David Mackanic.

To build it, Anthro secured a $24.9 million award from the Department of EnergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and $18.4 million in investment tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. Kentucky added $2.3 million in tax incentives in exchange for 110 permanent jobs.

The product: The factory will make a range of electrolytes, but Mackanic wants much of its output eventually dedicated to Anthro's own polymer, Proteus. It flows into a cell as a liquid, then firms up to glue the anode and cathode together — a design meant to pave the way to solid- and semi-solid-state batteries. The result, he said, is a cell "10 to 15 times stronger than with a liquid electrolyte" that can also flex.

Solid-state batteries promise higher energy density and lower fire risk by removing flammable electrolytes, and their solid barrier blocks dendrites — spiky growths that can short-circuit cells. Chinese companies are reportedly targeting trial production of solid-state batteries in 2027.

What could go wrong? Solid-state batteries have yet to reach their potential because no one has cost-effectively manufactured durable cells at scale. Many battery materials companies have failed at exactly this point, scaling from small to large production.

The signal: With federal funding behind it, Anthro is betting a domestic, China-free electrolyte source can clear the industry's "valley of death" — and put US solid-state batteries within reach for EVs, drones, and robots.
