New fund

NUtech Ventures launches $135K fund to close research-to-market gap

What's the deal? NUtech VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the technology commercialisation affiliate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, is launching the Innovation Advancement Fund, a proof-of-concept programme to move university research towards the market. The fund carries an annual $100,000 allocation from the Office of Research and Innovation and will award five to 10 grants this year, each worth up to $20,000.

Who's backing it? Three units are adding money for their affiliated faculty: the Agricultural Research Division ($20,000), the College of Engineering ($10,000), and the College of Arts and Sciences ($5,000).

What's the endgame? The fund targets technologies already disclosed to NUtech Ventures that show strong commercial potential. Money can support prototype development, data collection and technical validation, helping make technologies more appealing to licensees, industry partners and startup investors.

Why now? The programme is intended to address the "valley of death" between discovery and commercialisation, when promising university technologies can lack both traditional grant funding and private capital.

How it works: Full-time faculty apply as principal investigators, with postdocs, graduate students and other faculty as co-PIs. Applicants must be inventors of the technology and complete NSF I-Corps training before or during the project. Proposals are due by 17:00 on 15 September 2026, with finalists notified by 15 October 2026.

The catch: Awards are treated as recoverable expenses and reimbursed from future revenue generated by the technology. Projects run for six months to a year.
