Uber invests in Zipline to scale drone delivery on Uber Eats
What's the deal? Drone delivery startup Zipline has partnered with Uber to bring autonomous drone delivery to Uber EatsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → customers in the United States. Uber will also make a strategic investment in Zipline, but the amount was not disclosed.
Why now? The partnership is intended to accelerate Zipline's US expansion after a decade building drone logistics abroad. First deliveries are expected later in 2026, starting in Zipline's existing markets such as Dallas and Houston before expanding into dozens of US cities.
What's the endgame? The companies aim to reach one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029. Restaurants and small businesses would gain wider reach, while Uber Eats customers could receive orders in five to 10 minutes.
What could go wrong? Scaling across US cities remains contingent on regulatory authorisation for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations. Any regulatory slowdown could delay the expansion plans.
The signal: Uber is using its platform to work with autonomous delivery providers rather than building every capability in-house. Zipline adds quiet, fast, autonomous flight to Uber Eats' delivery network, giving the partnership a route to test whether drone delivery can become a routine part of urban commerce.
