Try Dealroom →, a seed programme backed by an initial commitment of up to £300,000. It targets startups and university spin-outs applying structural chemistry data, AI, and machine learning to scientific challenges. The fund is open to eligible companies worldwide.

Why now? "Structural chemistry is entering an exciting new era, driven by advances in data science and artificial intelligence," said Nigel Pitchford, chair of the CCDC board. The CCDC launched the programme at the 26th Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography in Calgary.

What's the endgame? The CCDC aims to expand the reach of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), the world's leading repository of small-molecule crystal structures. The fund backs ventures building novel tools and workflows on structural chemistry data in areas complementary to the CCDC's mission.

Beyond the cheque: Successful applicants may also receive access to the CSD, scientific and technical expertise, and the CCDC's global network of academic and industrial users. The CCDC operates as a charity, and any financial returns are reinvested into its charitable purpose.

The signal: Pitchford noted that "early access to funding and resources can be a significant barrier" for entrepreneurial scientists. By pairing capital with data and expertise, the CCDC is betting that community-led innovation can turn trusted research into commercial applications faster than internal work alone.
