D-Wave lands C$300K NRC grant to sharpen its quantum optimisation software

What's the endgame? Working with the NRC, D-Wave's team located at its Quantum Centre of Engineering Excellence in Burnaby, British Columbia, will develop next-generation software and algorithms to help organisations solve larger, more complex optimisation problems on D-Wave's Advantage2 annealing quantum computers. The project will create new graph minor-embedding algorithms for D-Wave's Zephyr topology and integrate them into the company's open-source Ocean software development kit.

Why it matters: Those algorithms map optimisation problems onto the hardware's topology — the foundational step that determines how much a system can handle. D-Wave expects them to expand the scale of computations across logistics, manufacturing, scheduling, resource allocation, machine learning, and materials simulation.

"Software innovation is essential to expanding the performance and commercial impact of quantum computing," said Dr Trevor Lanting, D-Wave's chief development officer. He said the aim is to help customers "solve larger and more complex optimisation problems" while strengthening Canada's quantum ecosystem.

By the numbers: The grant is modest by venture standards, landing in roughly the 19th percentile for deal size. D-Wave calls itself the world's first commercial supplier of quantum computers and the only firm offering both annealing and gate-model systems, software and services, with more than 100 organisations using its technology.

The signal: The NRC programme pools government, industry and academia to speed quantum commercialisation and cement Canada's position in the field. For D-Wave, the tie-up is less about the dollar figure than about state backing for the software layer that turns quantum hardware into practical tools.
