Anton Levy's Layer Global raises $1.1B in first close for debut fund

What's the deal? Anton Levy, the former co-president and chair of the global technology group at General Atlantic, has raised more than $1.1 billion in the first close of Layer GlobalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s inaugural fund. The fund's size will likely grow with subsequent closes, according to an August investor letter obtained by The Information.

What's the endgame? Layer Global is targeting companies that generate at least $50 million to $100 million in annual revenue and grow 100% or more, according to a person familiar with the fund. That places it in competition with the biggest names in venture and growth equity, backing both midstage and mature startups.

Why now? Levy is betting on AI as a rare opening. "We believe this is a uniquely compelling moment to pursue that mission, as AI reshapes the technology landscape faster than prior platform shifts," he wrote in the letter.

The fundraising push will continue through at least the end of the year, the person said.

What could go wrong? AI startup valuations have surged to levels unthinkable a generation ago. Anthropic is raising at a $350 billion valuation, having doubled that figure in under a year, while smaller startups see their valuations multiply within months.

A concentrated portfolio of high-growth bets amplifies the risk if the market corrects.

The signal: A $1.1 billion first close from a debut manager stands out in a market where LPs are backing fewer new names and funnelling most capital to established firms. Levy's ability to compete comes down to a track record built over years at General Atlantic — and a wager that AI is rewriting the rules fast enough to make room for a new player.
