3SIIF backs Estonia's Bioforce to quadruple biomethane output to 1 TWh by 2032

Try Dealroom →, Estonia's largest biomethane producer, to fund the company's expansion into Poland and Latvia. Bioforce holds an estimated 40% share of Estonia's biomethane market and operates three production facilities, with a fourth now entering commissioning.

What's the endgame? The capital will fund a pipeline of greenfield biomethane projects across Poland and the Baltic region. Bioforce aims to lift combined production capacity fourfold — from more than 250 GWh annually today to roughly 1 TWh by 2032.

The expansion: Bioforce plans to build its first Polish plant in 2027 and commission at least 10 facilities across the country over the following five years. It has already hired a local management team to run its Polish operations.

Why now? 3SIIF said expanding renewable gas capacity supports the energy transition in Central and Eastern Europe by cutting dependence on imported natural gas and diversifying regional supply. The fund gains exposure to biomethane through an integrated platform spanning production, operations, distribution, cross-border trading, and industrial offtake.

Henry Uljas, chairman of Bioforce's management group, called the transaction "the largest investment to date in biomethane production in the Baltic states." He said the funding would let Bioforce expand at home in Estonia while accelerating entry into Poland and other Baltic markets.

The deal is 3SIIF's sixth investment. Earlier bets include Polish locomotive leasing firm CargounitDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The investment reflects growing appetite for renewable gas as a tool for energy security in a region working to reduce reliance on imported natural gas. Backing an integrated producer with cross-border ambitions signals confidence that biomethane can scale as a regional energy source.
