Try Dealroom →, a Somerville, Massachusetts battery startup, has been awarded US$226.5K demonstration grant through the InnovateMass program, run by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The money will fund a project to validate its Terra Silicon anode material in real-world conditions.

Why now? The award is HKG Energy's second consecutive MassCEC grant. In 2025, it received US$48.5K Catalyst grant aimed at early-stage cleantech startups.

The InnovateMass grant is a step up in both scale and purpose. It is designed to fund demonstration projects — taking a technology out of the lab and proving it in a deployment-ready setting.

What's the endgame? Terra Silicon is HKG Energy's silicon-based anode material for lithium-ion batteries. While the industry standard sits under 5% silicon content, Terra Silicon reaches up to 70%.

Validated results to date include energy density above 350 Wh/kg, charging in under 14 minutes, and an 80% performance improvement at an estimated 40% cost reduction versus industry benchmarks. The company targets electric vehicles, aviation, robotics, defence, and stationary energy storage.

What does the money do? The demonstration project lets HKG Energy validate Terra Silicon outside controlled lab settings, generate data to support customer qualification, and build the foundation for scale-up.

The signal: Silicon anodes are a widely pursued route to higher-capacity, faster-charging batteries, and state-backed grants like MassCEC's help early cleantech startups bridge the gap from lab results to commercial deployment.
