PaveX lands $305K NSF grant to automate road repair planning

What does PaveX do? It uses AI and low-cost mobile sensors to automate road condition assessments, helping public works departments maintain infrastructure. Founder and chief executive officer Mohammad Jahanshahi, an associate professor at Purdue, developed the patent-pending platform and holds an exclusive license to commercialise it.

What's the money for? The project will build an automation framework enabling lane-level road coverage while cutting two bottlenecks: manual route planning and manual validation of uncertain pavement-distress detections. It will also develop a Bayesian data fusion approach that combines evidence across consecutive frames to suppress false positives.

Why it matters: "The system will collect street-level data and produce practical road condition ratings that help agencies plan repairs sooner and more efficiently," Jahanshahi said. He added the approach "can reduce vehicle damage costs while improving safety."

What's the endgame? Since January 2025, PaveX has surveyed more than 6,200 miles of roads across Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Utah, and California. Jahanshahi sees the technology eventually integrated into autonomous vehicles, letting them collect roadway data as they travel.

The signal: Non-dilutive federal grants remain a key funding path for deep-tech and university spinouts turning research into commercial products. For PaveX, the NSF backing marks a step toward scaling AI-driven infrastructure monitoring across transportation networks.
