Why now? Access to affordable capital remains a major barrier for African immigrant communities. An estimated 85,000 East Africans live in Minnesota, including about 3,000 who are self-employed or own businesses — many of whom struggle to secure financing through traditional institutions.
What's the endgame? AEDS says the investment has expanded its lending capacity, streamlined its processes, and grown its loan portfolio. The organisation is now focused on scaling its lending to reach more small businesses historically shut out of conventional lending.
The capital is structured as a Program-Related Investment (PRI). "The Black Renaissance Fund provided the first and largest PRI our loan fund has received to date, and we are deeply grateful," said Dr. Gene Gelgelu, founder and chief executive officer of AEDS. "Prior to this investment, our lending capacity was constrained."
One example: real estate agent Asnat Ghebremedhin had secured government funding for an affordable housing project but faced a financing gap. AEDS used BRF capital to close it, and the rehabilitated property now houses a low-income family.
Beyond capital, AEDS credits The Alliance with strengthening its infrastructure through technology upgrades, AERIS rating preparation, grant support, and operations — steps aimed at long-term sustainability.
The signal: The BRF is the only fund focused specifically on closing the capital capacity gap for Black-led community development financial institutions (CDFIs), according to The Alliance. "When community lenders are supported, entire communities gain greater access to capital and opportunity," said Amber Banks, its president and chief executive officer.
