Portugal's Equanto buys GoldNutrition owner, expanding to 26 countries

What's the deal? Portuguese food group Equanto has acquired Eco-Nutracêuticos, the company behind GoldNutrition, a Portuguese sports nutrition and dietary supplement brand. The deal adds GoldNutrition to Equanto's portfolio, which now spans six brands: Origens Bio, Whyfoods, Veggis, Eliora, EQX, and GoldNutrition.

What's the endgame? Equanto operates in healthy, organic, and functional food. It said the acquisition builds a group combining industrial capacity, product development, and a complementary portfolio across healthy food and supplements. The group now controls research and development, raw material sourcing, production, brand management, and distribution, tightening its grip on the value chain.

Why now? Internationalisation is a priority of the deal. The combined group is now present in 26 countries. Spain stands out: both Origens Bio and GoldNutrition have been building their presence there, and Equanto said integrating GoldNutrition SL will unlock commercial synergies in the Iberian market.

The terms: Deal value was not disclosed. Investment fund ActiveCap II takes a minority stake in Equanto, alongside GoldNutrition founder Custódio César and CEO Patrícia Berezetcki. Equanto said the structure preserves GoldNutrition's accumulated knowledge and aligns shareholders with management for the next phase of growth.

Equanto board member Francisco Reis said GoldNutrition is a brand with notoriety and credibility built over more than two decades among athletes and demanding consumers. César and Berezetcki said the deal reflects the recognition of GoldNutrition's work, with Equanto offering the industrial capacity and scale to take the brand to a new level.

The signal: The deal reflects consolidation in health and nutrition, as food players fold sports supplement specialists into broader portfolios to cover consumers from daily nutrition through to athletic performance.
