ideaForge lands US$20.5M in state debt to build heavy-lift drone

The capital, extended at a nominal interest rate under the government's Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) scheme, will fund development of YETI, a heavy-lift autonomous aerial platform.
What's the endgame? YETI is a fixed-wing VTOL hybrid aircraft built to operate in high-altitude, desert, and marine conditions. It can lift loads up to 200kg and reach ranges of up to 200km, taking off from small, semi-prepared launch pads and flying day or night.
The platform targets autonomous delivery of ammunition, equipment, and supplies to frontline locations, alongside infrastructure construction, offshore logistics, and emergency response. It marks ideaForge's move beyond surveillance UAVs into high-capacity aerial logistics.
Why now? India's armed forces defend terrain ranging from Himalayan operations at 4,000m to 6,000m altitude to western deserts, eastern marshes, and a long coastline — where weather and terrain cause critical logistics delays. ideaForge first unveiled the YETI concept at Aero India last year.
Between the lines: The financing is the first disbursement under the government's US$13.6B RDI scheme, which aims to back private-sector deeptech across AI, robotics, space, and advanced manufacturing.
"YETI represents a generational leap in what India can design, build, and operate autonomously," said Ankit Mehta, chief executive officer and co-founder of ideaForge. He called the government's confidence "a reaffirmation that Indian deeptech players are now ready to carry the weight of national capability-building."
The signal: The deal reflects a broader push toward specialised, AI-enabled logistics drones serving both military and commercial needs — and India's drive to build sovereign defence technology at home under its Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.
