DR Axion lands KRW 15B to shift from engine parts to EV components

What's the deal? South Korean auto parts supplier DR Axion has received a KRW 15 billion (roughly $10.4 million) investment from the Busan Future Industry Transformation Fund. The company makes precision aluminium cast engine components — including cylinder heads and cylinder blocks — for domestic and global automakers.

Why now? DR Axion is the first company selected by the fund, which Busan City and other stakeholders set up to back suppliers moving through industrial transformation. The timing reflects mounting pressure on combustion-engine part makers to adapt as vehicle technology shifts.

What's the endgame? DR Axion plans to upgrade its precision aluminium casting technology and expand into lightweight parts for electric vehicles. Lightweight materials matter more as automakers chase better efficiency, battery performance, and driving range.

The signal: The deal shows how traditional component suppliers are repositioning for electrification rather than defending shrinking engine-part demand. It also points to closer ties between government-backed funds and automotive suppliers across South Korea, where the sector is investing heavily in electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
