NordSpace backs North Vector Dynamics in early bet on sovereign Canadian hypersonics

The investment arm belongs to NordSpace Corp., which describes itself as Canada's only vertically integrated space missions company. Terms were not disclosed.
What does NVD do? Founded by aerospace engineers from the University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering, NVD specialises in precision interception, autonomy, and advanced propulsion. Its portfolio includes the AI-guided, ITAR-free CM-70 precision-guided interceptor, with a roadmap extending into hypersonic systems.
Why now? NVD holds a $4.2 million contract from Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) to advance high-speed and hypersonic aeropropulsion technologies for Canada and its allies. Both companies are key members of the Hypersonic Innovation Micro-net, awarded under the Department of National Defence's Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program.
What's the endgame? The deal deepens a technical partnership across two fronts: applying NordSpace's rocket propulsion technology to defence systems, and advancing Canadian hypersonic research. NordSpace intends to open its propulsion, manufacturing, and testing infrastructure — including its patent-pending Hadfield-150 engine line — to support NVD's roadmap.
The Micro-net, a university-led research network, backs priorities under NORAD modernisation and the Defence Industrial Strategy. It complements NordSpace's SHARP program, which flies dual-use vehicles for high-speed, high-altitude missions.
What they said: "North Vector Dynamics is exactly the kind of company Canada needs more of — Canadian-owned, ITAR-free, technically world-class, and building sovereign hardware for the threats that actually matter," said Rahul Goel, NordSpace chief executive officer and founder.
The signal: The investment adds NVD to a NordSpace Ventures portfolio focused on Canadian-owned firms advancing sovereign space and defence capabilities, joining hyperspectral imaging company Wyvern. It points to a growing push to build domestic, ITAR-free defence hardware aligned with Ottawa's Defence Industrial Strategy.
