Victoria launches A$1m fund to grow local musical theatre

It will back the local sector and the careers of Victorian writers, directors, performers, and lyricists.
What's the endgame? Projects will receive dedicated investment to advance their work, including productions heading towards commercial release. The aim is to build a pipeline of new Victorian productions.
Why now? Victoria is Australia's musical theatre capital, with the highest recorded revenue and attendance in the country. Its sector generated A$204.7m in ticket sales, or 38.5% of the national total, according to the most recent Live Performance Australia report.
"Musical theatre is big business for Victoria — employing thousands of Victorians and drawing tourists from around the world," said Vicki Ward, minister for creative industries. "This Fund gives Victorian stories the chance to shine on stages here and around the world."
Lord Mayor of Melbourne Nicholas Reece said the city has "one of the biggest and most vibrant musical theatre sectors in the world."
The signal: The fund is part of Creative State 2028, Victoria's strategy to strengthen its A$41.1bn creative economy through local jobs, investment, and homegrown talent.
