PV Labs lands C$5M federal grant to expand Canadian camera manufacturing
What's the deal? Burlington-based PV Labs will receive a C$5-million federal grant to expand domestic manufacturing of its camera systems, part of a broader C$7.5-million investment in three local companies. What's the endgame? The imaging company is running a C$14-million project to grow production and help build Canada's aerospace and defence capabilities. President and chief executive officer Mark Chamberlain said funds will go toward "growth, for marketing, sales, and equipment."
Why now? Chamberlain said the sector is one Canada has neglected but is "catching up fast." He pointed to both the size and timing of the grant, arguing the country cannot be overlooked in global geopolitics.
The C$5 million comes through the Regional Defence Investment Initiative. PV Labs has more than 70 employees at its Burlington headquarters, just off Waterdown Road.
The other recipients: Modern Elevator Innovations gets C$1 million via the Regional Tariff Response Initiative to modernise equipment and boost fabrication. Spatial Data Analytics, an AI engineering firm, receives C$1.5 million from the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative to scale work for telecommunications and utility clients.
The signal: Gould framed the funding as a chance for Canada to lead in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and innovation. As sizeable grants go, PV Labs' award sits at the higher end — a bet that domestic defence-tech capacity can offset external pressures. As Chamberlain put it: "Collectively, we need to play our part to support each other."
