The fund: The vehicle is a $200 million (roughly 300 billion won) SMA that Dominus formed in early 2026 using only KIC capital. In late 2025, KIC named Dominus as general partner for its first domestic investment initiative, part of a push to broaden beyond global operators.

How it works: Dominus made the investment by acquiring convertible bonds. Because the fund draws on foreign exchange reserves, it can only back overseas ventures — supplying dollar funds to Korean companies expanding production abroad.

Why now? Shinkwang Tech Mexico opened its plant in January 2024, near Hyundai MobisDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →' Mexican factory, and is raising money in 2026 to expand facilities. The subsidiary fit the fund's mandate precisely.

What's the endgame? This is a follow-up bet. Dominus had already invested 16.5 billion won in parent company Shinkwang Tech through its NV Mezzanine Plus Private Equity Partnership when the Mexican plant began operations.

The rationale: Dominus is betting on Mexico as a beneficiary of supply-chain reshuffling. With US firms shifting Chinese production bases to Mexico — "nearshoring" — it expects Shinkwang Tech Mexico to gain clients and North American reach.

The signal: Deploying the fund took time. "The KIC overseas investment-dedicated fund faced challenges in discovering investment targets because it must not only invest but also exit overseas," an IB source said, adding that remaining capital "is likely to be deployed in a similar structure."
