BGF backs Manchester consultancy Black Cat with multimillion-pound growth deal

What does the company do? Founded in 2015, Black Cat works across commercial, industrial, retail, and public sector property. Its services span building surveying, design, rating, mechanical and electrical, compliance, and project management — with projects totalling more than £734m across 83 million sq ft.

What's the endgame? The BGF investment will let Black Cat accelerate its expansion into new locations across the UK and Ireland, grow its workforce, and enhance client services. It currently operates 10 offices and employs 91 people.

Who's steering it? As part of the deal, Ian Plumb joins as non-executive chair from BGF's Talent Network. He has worked across several BGF portfolio businesses, including Emma Bridgewater and Evoke Creative, to drive strategic growth. The deal was led by Josh Bean and Emma Cassidy of BGF's North West team.

In their words: "In order to build on that momentum and increase our footprint in diverse markets, we needed an investor to take a patient and long term approach to growth," said founder and director Ben Golby. "BGF stood out as the ideal partner."

The signal: The deal reflects BGF's push into regional businesses. In 2025 it announced a £3bn commitment to UK companies over five years, including £400m for the North West, on top of the £596m already invested in the region since 2011.
