Microsoft pledges billions to fund Mistral's European AI buildout

The agreement lets Azure customers build AI apps using Mistral's data centres in France and adds its Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models to Microsoft's Foundry developer platform. Medium 3.5 will also reach Copilot Studio, Microsoft's AI assistant builder. Microsoft clarified the deal includes no ownership stake in Mistral.
Why now? The extended alliance lands as European governments and businesses push to cut reliance on US AI tools. The deal builds on a February 2024 partnership that brought Mistral's commercial models to Azure.

The signal: The deal shows US tech giants racing to embed themselves in Europe's AI infrastructure even as the region seeks independence from them. Wall Street stays bullish: 35 of 37 analysts rate Microsoft a Buy, with a 12-month average price target of $558.86, implying about 40% upside.
