MEO backs Google's Nuvem subsea cable linking Portugal to the US
What's the deal? Portuguese telecoms operator MEODealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has invested in Nuvem, a transatlantic subsea cable system developed by Google that will connect Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Sines in Portugal. MEO joins the project as an investor and partner.
Why now? Columbus III, previously the only cable linking Portugal to the US, reached the end of its life around 2020. MEO said the move reaffirms its commitment to digital infrastructure.
What's the endgame? Nuvem runs between the US East Coast and Portugal on a route that includes Bermuda and the Azores. MEO said the system strengthens international communications amid rising global demand driven by the cloud, artificial intelligence, data centres and digital services.
Nuno Cadima, chief operations officer at MEO, said the cable represents much more than a new link between Portugal and the United States, calling it strategic infrastructure to meet growth in cloud, AI and data centres.
Nigel Bayliff, Google's senior director of global subsea networks, said the future of global connectivity rests on solid partnerships and shared infrastructure, adding that the deal continues the company's push for greater internet reach, reliability and resilience.
The signal: The investment positions Portugal as a digital gateway between Europe and the Americas, and reflects how surging demand from cloud and AI workloads is driving fresh spending on the subsea cables that carry global internet traffic.
