What's the endgame? Founded in 2022, T2 is developing self-driving trucks for long-haul routes. It aims to launch Level 4 autonomous trucking — where the vehicle handles all driving in defined conditions — from fiscal 2027.

Why now? T2 has built a track record worth backing. Since 2024, it has run Level 2 trials with roughly 50 partner companies, began commercial operations in July 2025, and in March 2026 completed a driverless run across about 500km of highway between the Kanto and Kansai regions.

What's the fund's thesis? The Life Design Fund cited Japan's worsening logistics crisis, driven by a deepening driver shortage, as the rationale. It pointed to T2's technical strength and proven trials.

Chief executive officer Masatomo Kumabe said IGPVP and AEON Mall valued the company's efforts in building a next-generation logistics ecosystem, adding the firm will keep working at full strength toward Level 4.

The signal: Japan's logistics sector faces a structural labour gap that autonomy is being positioned to fill. Backing from a corporate-linked fund tied to AEON Mall — a major mall operator across Japan, China, and ASEAN — signals that incumbents see self-driving freight as core infrastructure, not experiment.
