Abakkus launches third fund as AUM tops ₹7,700 crore

What's the deal? Abakkus Asset Manager has launched its Large & Mid Cap Fund, its third equity scheme. Managed by Pratish Krishnan, the fund must hold at least 35% in large-cap stocks and at least 35% in mid-caps, balancing established-company stability with mid-sized-firm growth.

What's the endgame? The launch extends a product push at a firm now managing over ₹7,700 crore across more than 1.4 lakh investors. Chief executive officer Vaibhav Chugh plans to enter the hybrid fund category and apply for a Specialised Investment Fund license.

Investment approach: The team favours a bottom-up research strategy focused on company fundamentals over broad market trends. It is currently leaning toward financial services, consumer discretionary, and businesses tied to investment spending.

Why now? Founder Sunil SinghaniaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → says Indian equities have faced 18 months of performance pressure, citing stretched post-pandemic valuations, geopolitical tensions, and capital shifting toward technology-heavy markets. He expects foreign investor interest to improve as global conditions stabilise.

What could go wrong? Singhania has cautioned against expecting the returns seen in 2020–2024, arguing the current market rewards careful stock selection over broad upswings. Mid-cap picks also carry sharper price swings and liquidity risks during corrections.

The signal: The fund is a bet on domestic growth — Singhania forecasts India reaching an $8-trillion valuation — even as near-term returns look harder to come by. For investors, the test will be strategy consistency and performance against benchmarks in the coming quarters.
