New fund

MPE opens second retail private equity ELTIF from €5,000

What's the deal? Munich Private EquityDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (MPE) has launched its second European Long Term Investment Fund (ELTIF), the MPE Mid Market Private Equity ELTIF 2, opening it to retail investors from €5,000. The fund targets Europe's lower mid-market, investing solely in target funds and companies across the region.

How it works: The fund follows MPE's fund-of-funds model. As a feeder ELTIF, it permanently invests at least 85% of its capital in the Munich Private Equity Mid Market ELTIF 2 master fund, gaining indirect exposure to mid-sized companies across various sectors through institutional private equity target funds.

The fine print: This is a closed-end fund running until December 31, 2039, with payouts possible from January 1, 2032. Like its predecessor, it was set up in Germany and authorised by financial regulator BaFinDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

Why now? MPE frames the launch around access. "Many of these firms are market or technology leaders in their specialist markets and at the same time barely accessible to retail investors," said Norman Lemke, chief executive officer of Munich Private Equity, adding that European mid-sized firms generate roughly half the region's value creation.

What's the endgame? Nico Auel, a board member at MPE, positions the long lock-up as a feature, not a drawback. "The long-term capital commitment is one of the greatest strengths of private equity," he said, arguing that illiquidity gives managers room to back companies over years.

The signal: The ELTIF wrapper — designed to channel retail money into long-term European assets — is fast becoming the vehicle of choice for opening private markets to individual investors. MPE plans to distribute the fund in Germany and Austria, though its authorisation would in principle allow sales across the EU.
