KKR commits A$603M to launch HMC's Illuma Energy platform in Australia

What's the deal? ASX-listed HMC CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has launched a new energy platform, Illuma Energy, alongside the financial close of a strategic partnership with US private equity firm KKR. KKR committed up to A$603 million (US$423 million) to the platform, structured as A$355 million at transaction close and up to A$248 million more tied to the progress of the platform's first battery project.

What's the endgame? Illuma consolidates energy assets HMC built up over the past two years. It operates more than 650MW of wind, solar, and battery storage — including the 450MW Victorian Big Battery, the Bulgana Green Power Hub, and the 128MW Numurkah Solar Farm — and holds a national pipeline of nearly 6GW.

Where does the money go? KKR's equity covers roughly 90% of the capital needs for the Moorabool Battery Energy Storage System (VBB2) near Geelong, a 300MW/1,200MWh project with a four-hour discharge duration. Moorabool has secured a Capacity Investment Scheme Agreement, giving it long-term federal revenue guarantees ahead of the final investment decision.

Why now? HMC assembled the portfolio through two deals: a controlling stake in developer StorEnergy in 2024 and the A$950 million acquisition of Neoen's Victorian assets in August 2025. That Neoen purchase was a precondition for BrookfieldDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s takeover of Neoen, after Australia's competition regulator opposed Brookfield holding both generation, storage, and transmission assets in Victoria.

The arrangement cuts HMC's direct capital exposure to about A$190 million while it retains participation through equity and management fees. Illuma remains wholly owned by HMC, with KKR as an external capital and infrastructure partner.

What could go wrong? KKR's energy record is mixed: it has backed developers such as Stellar Renewable Power and Peregrine Energy Solutions, but also the now-bankrupt battery integrator Powin, and its fossil fuel investments have drawn criticism.

Illuma chief executive officer Gerard Dover said the launch and the KKR close are "significant milestones" for the platform, adding it is "well-positioned to play a key role in Australia's future energy landscape."

The signal: HMC says Illuma's near-term projects are fully funded and ready for final investment decisions. That matters as Australia faces a widening gap between planned and under-construction projects, driven by rising capital costs and grid connection delays — leaving capitalised, FID-ready platforms better placed to build.
