National Bank Investments launches SmartData Canadian equity fund with active ETF series

What's the deal? National Bank InvestmentsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (NBI) has launched the NBI SmartData Canadian Equity Fund, including an actively managed exchange-traded (ETF) series that began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker NSDC. The ETF series closed its initial offering of units, while the fund's other series were already available for purchase.

What's the endgame? The fund aims to provide long-term capital growth by investing mainly in equities of Canadian companies, directly or through other mutual funds. NBI acts as portfolio manager and has retained Goldman Sachs Asset Management as portfolio sub-advisor.

Why now? The launch expands NBI's SmartData suite, pairing a systematic, data-driven approach with the sub-advisor's expertise. "We are offering an innovative way to access the Canadian market, with the flexibility of an actively managed ETF series," said Martin Felton, vice-president, national sales at NBI.

The fund offers six series with varied fees. The ETF and F series carry a 0.30% management fee, while the advisor, investor and T5 series carry 1.30%. All series charge a 0.05% administration fee.

What could go wrong? NBI cautions that the funds are not guaranteed, their values change frequently, and past performance may not be repeated. ETF series units trade at market price, and brokerage commissions will reduce returns.

The signal: The launch reflects growing demand for actively managed ETFs that blend systematic strategies with human oversight. NBI, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of National Bank of Canada, held over $115.51 billion in assets under management as at 31 March 2026.
