Eavor lands US$5.87M Alberta grant to drill deeper for geothermal power

What's the deal? Eavor Technologies has won an US$5.87M (≈$5.6 million) grant from the Government of AlbertaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, awarded through Emissions Reduction Alberta's Drilling Technology Challenge. The Calgary-based company builds closed-loop geothermal systems that generate clean baseload power.

What's the endgame? The grant backs Eavor-Jules, an approximately US$60.9M project to advance the company's core Eavor-Loop technology. The goal: reach higher-temperature, deeper geothermal resources to raise energy output and improve the economics of future deployments.

Why now? Eavor's closed-loop system needs no underground water or rock permeability, so it can be deployed almost anywhere. The company has already demonstrated the technology at commercial scale in Geretsried, Germany, and is now pushing toward "superhot rock" via ultra-deep drilling.

What they're saying: "This support helps us advance ultra-deep drilling technology and the next evolution of our closed-loop system to reach superhot rock," said Matt Toews, Eavor's chief technology and operating officer. Chief executive officer Mark Fitzgerald said the funding "helps bridge the gap between breakthrough technologies and commercial deployment."

By the numbers: The Eavor award is part of US$27.1M that Emissions Reduction Alberta distributed across 10 projects under the Drilling Technology Challenge. The company has previously raised equity from investors including bp VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Temasek, BHP VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Canada Growth Fund, and Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund.

The signal: At US$5.87M, the grant sits in the 90th percentile of deep-tech grant rounds in Canada, based on 581 comparable deals. It reflects Alberta's bid to redirect its oil-and-gas drilling expertise toward next-generation clean energy.
