Anthropic redeploys Claude Fable 5 after US lifts export ban

What's the deal? AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is restoring access to its most advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after the US Department of Commerce lifted an export ban imposed just weeks earlier.

Fable 5 returns globally on July 1 across the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Mythos 5 access has been restored for a set of US organisations following government approval on June 26.

Why now? The Commerce Department applied export controls on June 12 over fears the models could help hackers exploit weaknesses in computer systems.

The trigger was a report from AmazonDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → researchers showing Fable 5 could identify software vulnerabilities and, in one case, produce code demonstrating an exploit.

Anthropic says it addressed the risks with new safeguards. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the firm agreed to proactively detect security risks, collaborate on future releases, and alert the government to malicious activity.

What could go wrong? The Commerce Department reserves the right to reimpose restrictions if needed.

Anthropic's own testing found less capable models — including Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.5, and Kimi K2.7 — could identify the same vulnerabilities, raising questions about whether the ban targeted the right risks.

The signal: The episode shows how tightly Washington now polices frontier AI, treating powerful models like controlled exports.

In response, Anthropic is building a shared industry framework with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other Glasswing partners to assess and fix model "jailbreaks."

Expect deeper collaboration between AI labs and government on pre-release testing and information sharing — a sign that national security is becoming central to how advanced models ship.
