NMB Bank lands $100M IFC loan to boost SME lending in Tanzania

What's the deal? Tanzania's NMB Bank has secured US$64.7M loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-sector arm of the World Bank Group. The funding is earmarked to expand lending to small and medium-sized enterprises across Tanzania.

Why now? SMEs form the backbone of Tanzania's economy but remain chronically underserved by formal financial institutions. The IFC loan gives NMB Bank — one of the country's largest commercial lenders — fresh capital to close that gap at a time when African development finance is under heightened global scrutiny.

What could go wrong? SME lending in emerging markets carries elevated default risk, particularly in economies vulnerable to currency fluctuations and commodity price swings. Whether NMB can deploy $100 million effectively while maintaining loan quality will be the key test.

The signal: The deal reflects a broader push by multilateral development institutions to channel capital through local banks rather than funding projects directly. It also underscores growing investor confidence in East Africa's financial sector as a vehicle for economic growth. For Tanzania's SMEs, access to credit could unlock the kind of expansion that donor-driven programmes alone have struggled to deliver.
