Bowmark Capital acquires UK construction data provider BCIS from LDC
What's the deal? Bowmark Capital has acquired the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS), the UK's leading independent construction cost data provider. The deal sees Bowmark take over from LDC, which invested in BCIS in 2022 and supported its transition to an independent business. Financial terms were not disclosed.
BCIS, established in 1961, provides data, indices, and insight across the built environment, alongside consultancy and research services. Its proprietary dataset covers capital cost, operational cost, insurance, carbon, and reinstatement data used by quantity surveyors, contractors, insurers, asset owners, and public bodies across thousands of organisations.
Why now? Under LDC's ownership, BCIS grew recurring revenues at over 25% per annum, driven by investment in data products, technology, and rising demand. The business has broadened its product offering and expanded its senior team since the 2022 carve-out, making it an attractive target for a growth-oriented buyer.
Bowmark has a track record of investing in market-leading software and data businesses. It plans to invest further in BCIS's data, technology, and AI capabilities to enable deeper customer insight and expansion into adjacent markets.
What could go wrong? BCIS is heavily concentrated in the UK construction sector, which is cyclical and sensitive to economic downturns. Any prolonged slump in building activity could dampen demand for its services, even as a data provider sitting upstream of actual construction work.
The signal: The deal reflects continued private equity appetite for niche, data-rich businesses with strong recurring revenue and deep moats. Proprietary datasets — especially those embedded in customers' workflows — command premium valuations because they are difficult to replicate and sticky by nature.
Bowmark partner Simon Kaufman said BCIS "occupies a unique position in the UK built environment, underpinned by its exceptional market reputation and proprietary benchmark dataset." The firm had been tracking the business for several years before making its move.
