Neo Next+ snaps up North Sea junior Deltic for $9.8M
What's the deal? UK independent Neo Next+ has agreed to acquire Deltic EnergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for approximately £7.2 million ($9.8 million) in cash. The deal gives Neo Next+ control of Deltic's North Sea portfolio, headlined by a stake in the ShellDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →-operated Selene gas discovery, which holds an estimated 174 billion cubic feet of gas.
Deltic chief executive Andrew Nunn said the deal represents "the best value and certainty for Deltic shareholders." As part of the agreement, Neo Next+ will provide a £2.9 million bridging loan to help Deltic repay debt from a previous failed takeover. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.
Why now? Deltic has endured months of uncertainty. Eight months ago, the company — teetering on the edge of administration — announced a £6.9 million takeover by Viaro Energy. That deal collapsed in April due to regulatory delays linked to Viaro's potential operatorship.
After the Viaro deal fell apart, Deltic confirmed talks with three other suitors. Neo Next+ emerged as the winner with a modestly higher bid.
What could go wrong? The deal still needs regulatory approval, and Deltic's recent history shows how quickly that process can derail a transaction. The company's financial fragility — it needed a bridging loan just to stay solvent through closing — adds another layer of risk.
The signal: With six transactions since the start of 2025 — including a merger with TotalEnergies' UK business — Neo Next+ is rapidly assembling a consolidation platform in a basin where smaller, early-growth operators like Deltic Energy are buckling under regulatory burdens and thin balance sheets. The £7.2 million price tag for a stake in a Shell-operated discovery holding an estimated 174 billion cubic feet of gas underscores how cheaply North Sea gas assets can be picked up when the seller has almost no leverage.
