Aether acquires fintech October, launches asset management arm

What's the deal? Aether, a French independent financial services firm, has acquired October, a European fintech that specialised in SME lending. The deal marks Aether's entry into asset management with a new division called Aether Asset Management Services.

October, founded in 2014, became Europe's leading disintermediated SME lender, deploying more than €1B — half of it outside France. It sold its technology platform to Sopra Banking Software in 2024 but retained deep expertise in fund structuring, securitisation, and portfolio management.

Why now? The acquisition continues a growth plan Aether set in motion after Capital Croissance's Edelweiss Croissance I fund invested in the company in July 2024. Since then, Aether opened offices in Madrid and Milan in 2025 and is now adding asset management to its suite of services.

The new unit will cover fund structuring and launch, operational management of private equity, private debt, and real estate vehicles, securitisation, servicing, recovery, and existing portfolio management.

What could go wrong? Integrating a fintech team into a financial execution firm is no small feat. October's staff — led by Patrick de Nonneville and Matthieu de Fréminville — will keep managing existing portfolios under the October brand, while new activities move under the Aether name. Merging cultures, systems, and client relationships across multiple European markets adds complexity.

The signal: The deal reflects a broader trend of consolidation among European financial infrastructure players. Independent firms are racing to build integrated platforms that let institutional investors outsource execution and operations in one place — spanning lending, fund management, and servicing. Aether is betting that combining October's track record with its own execution capabilities will create a one-stop shop for financiers across the continent.
