Itera exits stealth with $12M to bring real-time prototyping to electronics

The round was led by Upfront Ventures, with Costanoa Ventures and Colle Capital also participating.
Why now? Traditional printed circuit board (PCB) prototyping is slow and expensive. Each design cycle can cost hardware teams hundreds of thousands of dollars, contributing to an estimated $50B in annual global spending on electronics development. Unlike simulation software, which can't fully replicate real-world component behaviour, Itera's board uses actual components with real electrical signals — and lets engineers probe any internal circuit node, not just exposed test points.
"Software developers have been able to write code, test, and iterate in real time for decades," said AJ Cooper, chief executive officer and co-founder. "Itera makes real-time design and iteration possible for hardware too."
The company operates through an electronics-as-a-service model: customers' designs are assembled on Itera's multilayer substrates at US-based testing centres, and engineers can modify and test remotely until they have a validated design ready for manufacturing. Growing government focus on domestic manufacturing and supply chain resilience adds tailwind.
"I've worked with hardware companies for 15 years and there have been almost no innovations in how to massively reduce the time to test and iterate physical PCB designs," said Mark Suster, managing partner at Upfront Ventures. "Itera brings an AWS-like solution to testing hardware."
What could go wrong? Itera's claims are extraordinary — iteration cycles "up to 1,000x faster" — and the technology is unproven at scale. Fluid circuit boards made of glass and liquid metal will need to demonstrate reliability, signal integrity, and compatibility across a wide range of real-world designs before sceptics are convinced. The company also faces the classic deep tech challenge of bridging the gap between a working prototype and a commercially viable product.
Its service model, which routes designs through centralised US testing centres, could raise concerns about intellectual property security for customers in defence and automotive — precisely the sectors Itera is targeting first.
The signal: Upfront Ventures, which led the round, has a long track record backing infrastructure-layer tools — and framing Itera as "an AWS-like solution for testing hardware" signals a bet that electronics prototyping is ripe for the same platform shift that cloud computing brought to software. With initial capacity already claimed by a top-five automotive OEM and defence contractors, the real test will be whether demand from chipset makers and hyperscalers can push Itera beyond niche use cases into a broader, repeatable service model.
