Anton Levy launches $1B Layer Global to chase AI-driven hypergrowth

Try Dealroom →, former co-president and global head of technology at General Atlantic, has launched Layer GlobalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — a new investment firm with more than $1 billion to back AI-driven "hypergrowth" companies. Levy, who led investments in Facebook, Airbnb, Slack, Snapchat, and Alibaba, plans to back eight to ten companies per fund, targeting firms growing 50% to 300% a year.

"I've backed founders for my whole career and I wanted to be a founder," he told the Financial Times.

Why now? Levy believes AI is compressing the time it takes for winners to emerge. "Companies are getting bigger faster," he said, arguing that "300% is the new 100% growth rate."

He acknowledged a "risk-off moment" and short-term market volatility but said great companies will compound over time. AI usage, he added, is "still very, very early" — with "an explosion of usage" ahead.

What could go wrong? AI startup valuations have surged to levels unthinkable a generation ago. Anthropic is raising at a $350 billion valuation, having doubled that figure in under a year, while smaller startups see their valuations multiply within months.

A concentrated portfolio of high-growth bets amplifies the risk if the market corrects.

The signal: Levy's move reflects a broader trend of senior investors at large platforms leaving to launch focused, high-conviction vehicles. General Atlantic, which manages $84 billion in assets, remains a potential later-stage partner — Levy is still a large investor in the firm and expects his portfolio companies to eventually graduate to it.

That setup suggests growth equity's ecosystem is getting more layered, not more fragmented.
