SIM IP buys Garden Intel for $150M to build AI-driven patent licensing platform

Try Dealroom → in a $150M transaction, creating what the companies call a new platform for patent monetisation and licensing. Garden uses AI-driven tools to help businesses search, analyse, and value patent portfolios.

Garden’s cofounder and chief executive officer Adi SidaparaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → said the company will become the technology engine behind SIM IP’s pure-play licensing and royalty business. The combined group aims to scale revenue from intellectual property assets that often sit unused.

Why now? Companies are increasingly looking for ways to unlock value from patents as AI lowers the cost of analysing large portfolios. Garden argues that less than 2% of patents generate revenue today, leaving significant untapped potential.

The deal also reflects growing interest in specialised IP platforms as licensing becomes more data-driven and global. SIM IP says the merger positions it to build a larger infrastructure layer for innovation monetisation.

What could go wrong? Patent licensing remains legally complex and often adversarial, with disputes that can be expensive and unpredictable. Regulatory scrutiny and shifting court decisions could affect how aggressively firms can monetise IP.

There is also execution risk. Building a scaled licensing platform depends on securing high-quality patent assets and convincing corporates that monetisation outweighs reputational and litigation concerns.

The signal: The acquisition highlights how AI is moving into traditionally opaque parts of the legal and IP economy. Tools that once required teams of specialists are becoming software-driven businesses.

It also points to a broader trend of financialising intellectual property. As companies search for new revenue streams, patents are increasingly treated not just as protection, but as assets to be actively managed and monetised.
