Synthesia’s $4bn Bet: Building Profitable, Enterprise-Grade AI Video in Europe

In this episode of The Scaling Europe Show , host Seb Johnson speaks with Synthesia CEO Victor Riparbelli following the company’s announcement of a $200m Series E at a $4bn valuation, led by Google Ventures. Riparbelli argues Synthesia stands out in the current AI wave because it pairs fast growth with “high-quality revenue” and strong SaaS fundamentals—citing ~140% net revenue retention and adoption across much of the Fortune 100. Rather than chasing flashy demos, he repeats a core mantra: “utility over novelty,” claiming their edge comes from building the full enterprise workflow around AI video—editor, collaboration, CMS, translation, publishing, and admin/security features—so customers can go from idea to finished video quickly.

The conversation also highlights Europe’s ecosystem. Riparbelli says employee liquidity matters for creating more “startup millionaires,” which helps talent recruitment and fuels angel investing, and he confirms Synthesia’s secondary sale created cash millionaires. On strategy, he’s firmly in “growth mode” because unit economics are strong, and he believes profitability can be dialed up later.

Looking ahead, Riparbelli frames the next chapter as “AI-native video”: interactive videos you can talk to. He teases a new product, “Skills,” starting with sales training—pairing short videos with an agent that roleplays objections, gives feedback, and generates dashboards for sales leaders. Long-term, he sees a path to $1bn ARR and even a $100bn outcome as communication becomes video-first and software becomes agent-driven.
