Lemonade Launches Industry-First Autonomous Car Insurance, Betting on Tesla FSD

Lemonade just unveiled Autonomous Car Insurance, the first insurance product to price miles driven with Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) separately from manually-driven miles. Launching January 26 in Arizona and February in Oregon, the product cuts per-mile rates by 50% when FSD is engaged—reflecting Lemonade's data showing "significantly reduced risk during autonomous operation."

The product leverages direct integration with Tesla's onboard computer, providing real-time access to FSD engagement status, sensor data, and safety metrics that traditional insurers can't access. This partnership, announced in October 2025, gives Lemonade a first-mover advantage in an emerging category that could transform auto insurance as autonomous vehicles scale.

Strategically, this matters. Lemonade serves 2.87 million customers and is approaching profitability (adjusted EBITDA breakeven expected Q4 2026). Car insurance already represents 38% of revenue, with 50% of new policies cross-sold to existing customers. Adding high-margin AV coverage—leveraging the company's telematics pipeline built for pay-per-mile insurance—accelerates that timeline while positioning Lemonade as the leader in autonomous vehicle insurance for the 2030s.
