UK satellite company Open Cosmos has secured rights to Ka-band radio spectrum from Liechtenstein, a decision that could shape how Europe builds its next generation of space-based internet and communications services.
Ka-band spectrum is a type of frequency used by low-Earth-orbit satellites to deliver fast data connections. Liechtenstein’s decision follows years of legal and regulatory wrangling over the licence. Authorities withdrew Rivada’s rights in late 2024 after raising concerns about its ability to finance its planned satellite network. By awarding the spectrum to Open Cosmos, the country said it wanted to ensure the frequencies were actively used rather than tied up in long-running disputes.
For Open Cosmos, the licence provides a practical route into satellite communications, not just manufacturing. The company, which has spent the past decade building satellites for telecoms, Earth observation and scientific missions, said it plans to launch two Ka-band satellites in the coming weeks as the first step in a broader constellation.
The decision also carries wider significance for Europe. Satellite networks are increasingly seen as critical infrastructure, linked to digital resilience and security as well as commercial connectivity.
Although global bodies coordinate spectrum use, individual countries play a key role in deciding who gets access to specific frequencies.
