Nvidia and Eli Lilly Commit $1B to AI-Driven Drug Discovery Lab

The two companies said they will jointly spend $1 billion over the next five years to build a new AI-focused research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where their scientists will work side by side.
The lab will rely on Nvidia’s latest artificial intelligence hardware, including its next-generation Vera Rubin chips, to train advanced models for drug discovery. While the exact location of the facility has not yet been disclosed, the companies said it will be announced in March. Both firms described the project as a joint investment, without detailing how the costs will be split.
The move reflects how deeply AI is becoming embedded in the pharmaceutical industry. Drugmakers like Eli Lilly are increasingly using AI to help design new molecules, predict how drugs will behave, and reduce the time it takes to move treatments from the lab to patients. Lilly has already been expanding its computing power, recently announcing plans to build a supercomputer using more than 1,000 of Nvidia’s current-generation AI chips.
For Nvidia, the partnership fits into a broader strategy in biotechnology. Rather than developing drugs itself, the company focuses on providing the hardware, software, and open-source AI models that pharmaceutical companies can use to build their own research platforms. On the same day as the announcement, Nvidia also unveiled new AI models designed to help ensure that drugs created with AI tools can actually be manufactured in real-world labs.
Executives from both companies emphasized that the lab represents an expansion of resources, not a reshuffling of existing teams. By placing Lilly’s drug development expertise closer to Silicon Valley’s AI ecosystem, the partners hope to generate new data and insights that could push AI-driven drug discovery further into the mainstream of pharmaceutical research.
