Balderton’s Early £1 Million Revolut Investment Ranks Among Europe’s Biggest VC Wins

In 2015, Revolut was a small fintech start-up with ambitious plans and limited capital, building a new kind of financial app at a time when most consumers still relied on traditional banks. Balderton Capital, a London-based venture firm, led Revolut’s first funding round with a £1 million investment, backing the company at its earliest stage.

A decade later, that decision ranks among the most successful bets in European venture capital. Revolut is now valued at around $75 billion, and Balderton has turned its early stake into billions of dollars. Over the past year, the firm has sold roughly $2 billion worth of shares while retaining a significant position as the company moves closer to a potential public listing.

The investment sits in Balderton’s fifth fund, raised during a difficult period following the firm’s separation from Silicon Valley investor Benchmark Capital. The fund raised $305 million and has since returned more than 25 times that amount to investors, with Revolut accounting for the majority of the gains and fundamentally reshaping the fund’s performance.

At the time, fintech was widely viewed as a risky sector, particularly in Europe, where trust in young financial companies was limited. Balderton believed the region had a structural advantage in financial services and was persuaded by founder Nikolay StoronskyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →’s technical depth and execution-focused approach, which emphasized infrastructure and scale over marketing.

As Revolut grew, Balderton continued to back the company through subsequent funding rounds, even as valuations climbed and new investors joined. The original £1 million investment alone is now worth billions, making Revolut not only a landmark success for Balderton but also a defining example of conviction, timing, and long-term thinking in early-stage venture capital.
