BYD Overtakes Tesla as EV Sales Slide and U.S. Incentives Fade

Tesla has lost its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle seller after reporting a 9% drop in global sales in 2025, allowing China’s BYD to take the lead for the first time. The shift marks a significant moment in the global EV market, reflecting both changing consumer demand and diverging policy environments in the United States and China.

Tesla said it delivered around 1.6 million vehicles worldwide in 2025, down from nearly 1.8 million the year before, with sales falling sharply in the final quarter after U.S. federal tax credits for electric vehicles expired at the end of September. Deliveries in the last three months of the year declined by about 16%, suggesting how closely Tesla’s U.S. performance had been tied to government incentives.

BYD, by contrast, reported 2.3 million electric vehicle sales, up roughly 28% year on year. While the Chinese automaker remains largely shut out of the U.S. market by tariffs, it has expanded rapidly across Asia, Europe and Latin America, helping it surpass Tesla on an annual basis. Analysts note that BYD’s broad product range and competitive pricing have been key to its growth.

The downturn has raised questions about Tesla’s near-term outlook, particularly in the United States, where EV demand has cooled following policy changes under the Trump administration that rolled back tax credits and emissions rules. Tesla, which still accounts for about 45% of the U.S. EV market, has been more exposed than rivals to the sudden shift.

Even so, investor attention has increasingly moved beyond car sales. Tesla’s share price held up in 2025 as the company emphasised longer-term bets on self-driving technology, robotaxis and robotics. For the wider EV industry, analysts expect 2026 to remain challenging, with a potential rebound only when more affordable electric models reach the market in the following years.
