Google and Meta Form Alliance to Breach NVIDIA’s "CUDA Moat" with “TorchTPU”
As 2025 draws to a close, the $4 trillion "software prison" surrounding NVIDIA’s AI empire has begun to show its first major structural cracks. Reports have surfaced of a high-stakes collaboration between Google and Meta, codenamed “TorchTPU,” a project designed to allow AI developers to run code natively on Google’s hardware without the millions in engineering costs typically required to leave NVIDIA’s ecosystem.
For years, NVIDIA’s dominance has been protected by CUDA , a proprietary software layer that acts as the essential translator between AI code and hardware. Because PyTorch —the world's most popular AI framework—was optimized specifically for CUDA, switching to a competitor like Google meant a grueling process of rewriting code into Google’s native framework, JAX.
"Google’s TPUs have always been fast, but they were effectively speaking a language no one else wanted to learn," says an industry analyst. "TorchTPU is the universal translator the market has been waiting for."
The timing of the leak coincides with the general availability of Google’s seventh-generation chip, TPU v7 (Ironwood) . Internal benchmarks reveal that Ironwood delivers 4.6 PetaFLOPS of compute, placing it in a direct statistical tie with NVIDIA’s flagship Blackwell B200 .
However, Google’s real advantage lies in scale. While NVIDIA systems are typically limited to 72 GPUs in a single rack-scale domain, Google’s Superpod architecture can link 9,216 chips into a single unified fabric using optical circuit switching.
The threat to NVIDIA is no longer theoretical. Anthropic , the developer of Claude, recently announced a landmark $52 billion deal to access up to one million Google TPUs. Simultaneously, Meta is reportedly co-developing TorchTPU to diversify its own massive infrastructure, using the project as leverage to negotiate lower prices from NVIDIA.
The news has sent tremors through Wall Street. NVIDIA’s valuation, which peaked at $5 trillion earlier this quarter, has retraced to $4.3 trillion as investors grapple with a future where hardware is a commodity and software lock-in is no longer a guaranteed defense.
Google is reportedly considering open-sourcing the TorchTPU stack in early 2026. If successful, the project won't just offer an alternative—it will dismantle the very foundation of NVIDIA’s pricing power.
