For years, Anduril Industries has set out to remake the way defense technology is developed, favoring rapid iteration and constant real-world testing over the traditional, slow-moving acquisition cycle. That philosophy is now under scrutiny. In recent weeks, a series of high-profile news reports spotlighted instances in which Anduril systems malfunctioned—from drones losing stability to autonomous vessels needing to be towed back to port. To outside observers, the coverage suggested a company struggling to meet expectations.
Inside Anduril, the interpretation is different. Executives argue that these incidents are the inevitable byproduct of an aggressive development model, one that mirrors the early histories of companies like SpaceX and Palantir—firms that endured public missteps before becoming central players in national security. In Anduril’s telling, the legacy defense ecosystem is accustomed to programs that minimize visible failures by minimizing real testing. A company running thousands of field trials a year will simply have more go wrong, and they believe the attention reflects discomfort with the speed at which they are operating.
Anduril maintains that each malfunction is less a setback than a data point. What appears as disorder from the outside, the company frames as acceleration—evidence that it is updating hardware and software at a pace the defense establishment rarely attempts.

Anduril says that exposure to these environments allowed it to redesign platforms far more quickly than lab-based development would permit. Newer versions, they claim, have already shown improved performance.
