Cash Flood: Medicxi Unleashes Half-Billion-Euro War Chest on High-Impact Biotechs

Medicxi, a leading European life sciences investor, has closed a new €500 million biotech fund that will be deployed directly into innovative biopharma companies. The fresh capital, described as Fund V, deepens the firm’s firepower at a time when many biotech startups are still facing a challenging fundraising environment. Backed by a mix of returning limited partners and new institutional investors, the vehicle is designed to support high-conviction bets across the biotech pipeline, from early discovery through late-stage development.

The new fund builds on Medicxi’s long-standing “asset-centric” strategy: rather than backing broad platforms, the firm concentrates on companies built around a small number of well-defined drug assets with clear paths to the clinic and, ultimately, to patients. This disciplined approach has helped Medicxi carve out a differentiated position in the European biotech ecosystem, focusing on drug hunters and entrepreneurs who have a sharp product vision and are targeting validated or high-potential biology.

Medicxi itself has deep roots in the sector. Founded in 2016 by the former life sciences team of Index Ventures, the firm is headquartered in Europe and manages a multi-billion-euro portfolio spanning early-stage biotech up to more advanced clinical companies. Over the last several years, its funds have supported the development of multiple marketed or late-stage drugs and have generated more than $1 billion in realizations from IPOs and acquisitions, including transactions involving Vaxcyte, Merus, ViceBio, Versanis Bio and ProfoundBio.

With Fund V, Medicxi is positioning itself to lean into the next wave of precision therapeutics and specialty medicines emerging from Europe and beyond. The firm plans to continue backing new company creation as well as reinvesting in its highest-conviction portfolio stories, reinforcing its role as a long-term partner to scientific founders. In a market where capital has become more selective, a €500 million dedicated biotech fund signals confidence that breakthrough biology, strong data and focused execution can still attract substantial support—and that Medicxi intends to be one of the most active sponsors of that innovation.
