From Meta to Stealth: Yann LeCun Sets Out to Build a World-Model AI Startup

For over three decades, Yann LeCun has been one of the defining figures of modern AI. A pioneer of convolutional neural networks, he helped turn early experiments in handwritten digit recognition into the foundations of today’s deep learning. As a professor at New York University  and founding director of Facebook AI Research (later Meta AI), he built labs that bridged academic research and large-scale industrial deployment, influencing everything from computer vision to AI tooling.

In recent years, LeCun has become increasingly outspoken about the limits of large language models. Rather than scaling text prediction, he argues that human-level intelligence will require “ world models ”: systems that learn how the physical and social world works by observing and predicting it, then planning actions within it.
