General Atlantic Invests $600 Million in PhonePe Ahead of India IPO

U.S. growth-equity investor General Atlantic has invested $600 million in PhonePe , one of India’s leading fintech companies, as the Walmart-backed firm advances plans for an IPO in 2026 .

The transaction, comprising both primary and secondary share purchases, increases General Atlantic’s stake to roughly 9% , doubling its earlier holding and reaffirming its confidence in the company’s long-term potential.

Founded in 2015, PhonePe has emerged as one of India’s largest digital finance platforms , serving over 500 million registered users and commanding a dominant share of transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) —the backbone of India’s digital payments system. Its platform now extends to mutual funds, lending, and merchant solutions , part of its effort to evolve into a comprehensive financial services hub.

The new funding will help PhonePe expand beyond digital payments into areas such as wealth management, insurance, and small-business services , while reinforcing its capital base ahead of the listing. It also reflects General Atlantic’s confidence in India’s fast-growing fintech ecosystem , where PhonePe has become a leading player.

The latest funding follows several rounds completed in 2023 , which valued PhonePe at around $12–13 billion . General Atlantic first invested in PhonePe in early 2023 and has since become one of its most prominent external shareholders. For the U.S. firm, this is among its largest India-focused investments to date, underlining its strategy of backing high-growth technology companies driving digital transformation across key emerging markets.
