Stratis Emerges to Build Europe’s Sovereign Data Platform

Stratis Intelligence is a newly revealed European data & intelligence startup, emerging from stealth with backing from Darkstar (an Estonian defense-tech fund). At its public unveiling, CEO Ingvar Helgason described Stratis as a platform built to enable queries across “petabyte-scale” spatial, temporal, and economic datasets, stitching together sensor data, supply chain signals, and less obvious “weak signals” to inform decisions across security, commerce, and infrastructure domains. The system is designed to operate without transferring or exposing proprietary data—it can run on air-gapped or encrypted servers, on older hardware, and in high-security environments.

The co-founders’ background is a defining element of the company’s identity. Technologist Smári McCarthy (co-founder) brings a track record that spans public sector, journalism, and data infrastructure—he was instrumental in building the Aleph platform that powered the Panama Papers disclosures and formerly served in Iceland’s parliament. Helgason previously founded biotech firm VitroLabs. Their combined experience in data, security, and civic tech underpins Stratis’ positioning not merely as a commercial analytics platform, but as a tool for European technological sovereignty.

Stratis’ disclosed funding is anchored by Darkstar’s investment, reportedly the fund’s largest cheque so far—though both parties declined to share the amount. The capital is intended to seed hiring across the Nordics and Baltics, support product delivery, and scale first-use cases, including mission planning tools already being tested in Ukraine. The startup’s mission is to provide Europe with sovereign, self-reliant analytics and intelligence solutions that are free from export dependencies.
