Betting on AI to Transform Insurance: Jonathan Crystal’s Venture Play
Jonathan CrystalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →’s career has been inseparable from insurance. After joining his family’s brokerage, Crystal & Company, he rose through the ranks to CFO, eventually helping orchestrate a sale to Alliant in 2018. Yet, decades in the industry left him restless. “The only thing my grandfather would be surprised by now is email,” he jokes, pointing to an industry he sees as historically slow to evolve.
That restlessness sparked a new venture. Crystal founded Crystal Venture Partners , a New York-based venture capital firm focused on startups using artificial intelligence to modernize insurance. The firm’s debut $33 million fund , backed by family offices and global insurers, aims to target practical, high-impact software solutions rather than headline-grabbing “disruptors.”
Crystal leans on his operational experience to separate promising ideas from hype. Early bets reflect that philosophy: Bright Harbor, which helps communities recover from natural disasters, and Sixfold, a generative AI platform for underwriting, both secured significant follow-on rounds after Crystal’s initial investment. So far, the firm has announced six investments, with fifteen planned.
For Crystal, insurance is anything but niche. It intersects with healthcare, cybersecurity, and climate risk, touching almost every sector of the economy. AI is accelerating the pace of change, and Crystal Venture Partners is positioning itself at the intersection of technology and one of the world’s oldest, most regulated industries. The challenge—and the opportunity—is figuring out which innovations will actually stick.
